Abstract and thesis

The atomic bombs were justified because the Japanese were showing no signs of surrender. During the battles of every island that we liberated from them, they were fanatical, often fighting to the last man, never surrendering. If we had to invade their home islands, it was estimated that we would have possibly lost one million of our soldiers as casualties.
The United States and its allies had been fighting against the fanatical facist countries of Germany and Japan for four plus years. Both sides had suffered greatly.  Millions of soldiers, and civilians had died during this time. The whole world was weary and wanted this war to end. Japan was showing no signs of surrendering and appeared willing to sacrifice to the last man, woman, and child.  The bombs were dropped in a desperate attempt to show Japan that they had no choice but surrender; avoiding the deaths of potentially millions more from both sides. On March 9, 1945, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Since the Japanese still did not surrender, the United States then dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki. Finally, the Japanese realized that further resistance was futile and surrendered unconditionally.
